"Got a gun?"

With those words, David Allen Crockett, a retired police officer who simply wanted to be left alone, finds his seclusion shattered by his friend, therapist Ruby LaCost. At Ruby's request, Crockett agrees to teach one of her clients, Rachael Moore, how to defend herself with a handgun.

During the course of those lessons, Crockett and Rachael begin an intimate relationship. When Rachael is found dead from an apparent suicide, Crockett is devastated and tries to slink back into his self-imposed seclusion. But things get complicated when Crockett is contacted by Rachael's aunt, who believes the suicide was staged and claims she has the name of the murderer. Together, Crockett and Ruby begin an investigation that leads them into a world of treachery, deceit, and death.

Fear of the Father Call Me Crockett The Crockett Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) David R Lewis Open Book Audio Books

David R. Lewis writes character driven novels...which is a good thing for me, since that's the only kind I care to read, and I read a lot. Other reviewers have already written glowingly of the two "main" characters, Crockett and Ruby. Or Ruby and Crockett, depending on your perspective. For me, those two would be nothing without the rest of the cast: Rachael (whom I will love till the end of Time), Nudge (a thirty-plus pound tomcat short one fang but in full retention of all his claws), and others.

That said, Crockett's first name is David. Yes, as in Davey Crockett. When that song came out on the radio, I was in my teens and drove my Dad nuts every time I sang it within half a mile of his tender ears. I think he had Fear of his Son, or at least his son's singing voice, a situation an impartial observer might have found a tad amusing. But hey, back to the review. Despite the humor laced throughout Fear of the Father, there's nothing funny about the plot. It's all too realistic, as anyone who's read up on hypnosis, behavioral conditioning, and the twisty-snarly paths of so many human minds will know. The author's past as a cop shows through. Once upon a time, a deputy sheriff in a small north central Montana town told me, "Most people have no idea of the filth that walks by their front doors every day." David Lewis has more than an idea and brings to life both the Dark and the Light of the human condition in fine fashion.

Just how good is the Crockett saga? Let me put it this way. I intended to write this review the minute I finished reading the book, but before I could blink I was nearly finished with the third book in the Crockett series. These tales are seriously addictive.

Fear of the Father Call Me Crockett The Crockett Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) David R Lewis Open Book Audio Books Reviews

I have read all of Mr. Lewis Trail series books and I loved all of them but I did not care for this book. The constant banter back and forth between Crocket and Ruby got old very quickly. Just not my kind of enjoyable reading.
I enjoyed the book very much. One reason is that it's primary setting, the Champaign, IL area, is where I went to school and lived for a year after graduating. Good use of 'local color'. I didn't know the setting until I started reading the book. I experienced a bit of frustration about the relationship between a 'straight' guy and his lesbian friend. Lots of sexual innuendo with no resolution to the problem of their deep love for each other. I do recommend the book and I plan on continuing the series. Another well-written book with a good story line.
The story kept me reading and it was easy to become involved. The characters are interesting, fun and scary. The time spent on the relationship of the two main characters did not seem to need so much attention. The story alone was very, very intriguing . I was loved the investigation, the chase and surprises. I have gone on to book two.
I expected more based on the overview of the book. The characters were developed and the relationships were somewhat unbelievable. Not enough of the "suspense" with too much time spent on the locker room relationship between Crockett and Ruby.
I first met"Mr. Lewis" on "The Trail" with Reuben Beeler and the gang. I listened to the entire "Trail Series" on audio books. I loved them so much that I got my husband hooked on listening to them on road trips as well. I feel that the series came to an end MUCH TOO SOON! However since I needed new listening material I downloaded the first Crockett book. I had a little trouble not associating the character voice to Reuben and company, but once the story got going we hated to stop listening. We live in Eastern Montana and found the sarcastic humor in the stories hysterical. I encourage anyone to give this author a try, I'm so glad I did. I can't wait for book 2 to come out in audio from.
David, all I can say is this You are truly amazing. I never in my life thought I'd be able to find another author like our mutual hero Robert B. Parker, but you are the man. After finishing the incredible Trail series, I moved onto Crockett, vol.1. Unbelieveable, is the only word I can use. Laugh out load sometimes, tears in my eyes other times. Characters you can not only relate to but identify with, empithize with, characters who you can feel...who are real. These are not fictitious people, Crockett, Ruby, Spike, Ivy, Cletus...these are real people you have created and are now part of my universive, like Spock, or Holmes...or Spencer and Hawk. Congratulations my friend on a job singularly well done, and I look forward to vol. 2, which begins right after this short intermission.
I don't want to give away the "just desserts" given the villains but their demise was well-deserved. Until now my favorite two murder/mystery/thriller heroes were Jack Reacher and Lt. Eve Dallas. Now Crockett has joined them. Whoever knows the phrase "Lord Love a Duck" will have to read this terrific novel to understand why I'm using it here. A most unusual romance also develops between Crockett and Ruby. READ THIS! You won't be disappointed.
